🌟Hello #AcademicMastodon🌟
I'm Hannah and currently working on the research project to understand the role of #Mastodon in #academia during my internship here.
If you haven’t done so already, please consider participating in the project. I would love to hear from you:

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who has already participated in the survey! It is really insightful to read your opinions and experiences.

I think EVERY student, graduate students included, should register with the disability office, and here's why.

I want to somewhat brag for a second.
This paper is freely available online and neither I nor the other author were paid to produce it. This is a scientific publication that exists only as a result of voluntary unpaid labor and it is free to read.

And it's not like I'm expecting you to think "oh my god, what an amazing paper".
It's just that I think being able to do that kind of thing is rare. But it's my personal proof I do productive things just because I freaking want to, if given the freedom to act that way.

Educators and academics, this is a well-written and well-argued blog post on what we can do to oppose genocide.
If anyone knows of similar blog posts, articles, etc., I'd love to know about them.

I got into AI from physics.
I liked creating numerical simulation data for an electronic circuit. Seeking info on how to do that better led me to computer science. Then, I became fascinated by the idea of rigorously implementing functional equivalents to things, not just simulating them. The temporal difference RL story contextualized by utility theory made a lot of sense to me at the time. And here I am now, with a PhD working on cognitive architecture.
I had no idea I was going to end up here. Luck, privilege, and hard work all came together for me. For those of you who don't know where you belong, I wish you the luck to know you're there if you stumble into it like I did.
For those of you who don't have the luck or privilege, all I can really offer is that I will avoid pulling up ladders for others. I won't forget life before, lived need to need. It's honestly still not far away.
Anyone who wants to reply "luck is just when preparation meets opportunity", please don't.
