It's happening: sea ice moved out between Big and Little Diomede in the middle of the Bering Strait Saturday evening (May 27) as seen in this pix shared with permission. In spite of strong currents the #seaice often gets stuck between the two islands and so hangs on longer than ice to the east and west of the two islands. With the the ice moving out large flocks of summer birds have returned, which is good news for Diomeders. #akwx #Alaska @[email protected] @[email protected]

Annual update to the 50-year seasonal temperature changes in and around #Alaska (ºF), now for 1973-2022, all from ERA5 courtesy of ECMWF/Copernicus. The incredible warming in the autumn across northern Alaska is driven by the loss of sea ice. The comparatively modest warming in summer in part reflects the unimportance of snow and ice in that one season. #akwx #Arctic #climate #climatechange

#Introduction time: I'm Rick. I've been fascinated by #Arctic and #boreal #weather, #climate and #cultures for more than 50 years. I've worked as a weather & climate professional for 40 years in private, public & academic spheres. I've been fortunate to live most of my life in #Alaska, and most of that time on Lower Tanana Dene lands near Fairbanks. Also, I have a big interest in Alaska Indigenous languages and will support/promote at every opportunity. I'm strongly pro-kindness and anti-troll.
