#Atari has died and been reborn around a dozen times. Yes, the company as it currently exists isn't the same as when Pong came out. Neither was it the same company as when Warner Brothers piecemeal sold it in the 1980s to Jack Tramiel, Mitsubishi, etc. Nor the same company when it was a Naamco sub-brand. Nor when Hasbro owned it.

Sure, Atari today isn't the same as it was in the 1970s, but the same is largely also true for Activision, SEGA, Rare, Square, etc.

One of the reasons I bought a 2600+ is that *most* of my 2600 games work on it, so if/when my actual 2600 eventually dies, I'll still have a way to play my actual cartridges and use my actual Atari controllers, assuming the 2600+ holds up.

There's no such benefit from this 400 mini.

The user manual (which takes a bit of digging to find online) has these rather telling things to say about the experience as well. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1V4JUcIzkCGoCbUWreuQAzSu4QaOwW6LS/view And yes, the RetroGames website links to Google Drive for the manual. It's not on the Atari website AFAICT. https://retrogames.biz/support/the400-mini/manuals/ #Atari #retrocomputing #retrogaming #400mini

So, reading more into this, I was expecting something more like the 2600+, but this is something more like the NES mini. There's no SIO port or cartridge support. So it's effectively a dumbed down retropie in a novelty shell. Here's what I think they should do instead: Re-release the #Atari 130XE, with an actual 6502, SIO, 9-pin ports, cartridge support, and an upgraded keyboard. But don't stop there - add hdmi upscale out and embed #FujiNet into it for usb/network support.

I have three different memories of the first time I played a #nintendo: * with my cousin at a Hills department store and specifically, the 1-1 to 1-2 transition * playing SMB2 with a baby sitter * a neighborhood friend brought over an NES with Castlevania In my mind, these were all the very first time I ever played an NES. Three different games with three different people. Yet I vividly remember my first #Atari experience, where I was even younger. It was Combat, followed by River Raid.

What #Atari needs to do next is straight up reproduce the XE and 7800. I don't mean as ARM emulation. I mean 6502 with a separate internal HDMI conversation and a toggle switch for it added to it. They should both have serial ports, and support the original controller ports (with an extra protection against shorting). They should release a backwards compatible mechanical switch version of the XE keyboard and new 7800 controllers.
