Stretch. This marbled godwit () was stretching its wings on the beach at Gulfport, Mississippi. "Shorebirds have some of the most interesting bill shapes and the Marbled Godwit is no exception with its swordlike bill. It plunges its two-toned, long, and slightly upturned bill deep into sand and mud to pull out aquatic invertebrates and plant tubers. This graceful shorebird is speckled in browns with a cinnamon wash that is especially noticeable when it spreads its long and pointed wings to take flight. It breeds in the northern prairies and spends the winters along the coasts." - allaboutbirds.org #photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #bird #birdwatching #birdphotography #birdsofmastodon #MarbledGodwit

Oriole Here is a Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula) who was around last spring for a week or two. There were several who hung around, I put out orange halves for them. The were also attracted to the suite feeder. "Baltimore Orioles eat insects, fruit, and nectar. The proportion of each food varies by season: in summer, while breeding and feeding their young, much of the diet consists of insects, which are rich in the proteins needed for growth. In spring and fall, nectar and ripe fruits compose more of the diet; these sugary foods are readily converted into fat, which supplies energy for migration. ..." - allaboutbirds.org #photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #bird #birdwatching #birdphotography #birdsofmastodon #asllaboutbirds.org

Sparrbow. Every time I see one of these little chipping sparrows (Spizella passerina) with their camouflage face and little red feather top, I think of army camouflage. It gives the little birds a tough look. There were hundreds of these little birds around during the winter and early spring. Now, I only see a few foraging on the ground now and then. I read that they switch their primary diet from seeds to insects in the spring and summer. Diet "Mostly insects and seeds. Diet varies with season. In summer, feeds mostly on insects, including grasshoppers, caterpillars, beetles, leafhoppers, true bugs, and many others, plus some spiders. Also eats many seeds, especially in fall and winter, including those of grasses, weeds, some waste grain." - https://www.audubon.org/field-guide/bird/chipping-sparrow #photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #ChippingSparrow

Hunter in the grass. There were a couple postings about robins this morning, probably from farther north. I haven't seen many American Robins (Turdus migratorius) lately, but early spring they were around a lot. Large flocks would fly over. There are some still around but scattered throughout forest areas, I think. My Merlin app picks up their songs once in a while. "Although robins are considered harbingers of spring, many American Robins spend the whole winter in their breeding range. But because they spend more time roosting in trees and less time in your yard, you're much less likely to see them. The number of robins present in the northern parts of the range varies each year with the local conditions." - allaboutbirds.org #photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #AmericanRobin
