Wild A** Larch
This Japanese Larch has the craziest trunkline ever. Not sure what I am waiting for in getting it into a real pot…It is almost a real #bonsai already.
Going to look for a pot.

First sightings of the season. We don’t get a ton in the city, so happy to see #today.

Big Old Beech #Bonsai
I purchased this Beech from a club member and he said it needed to be repotted. That was 3 years ago. It does need to be repotted, but it is so tightly bound and the soil so altered to clay that I cannot get it out.
It hasn’t hurt it so far, but will do it this year to avoid mishap. It is probably 25-35 years old, so I want to be sure and keep it healthy.
Strong early growth this year and it shows little sign of heat/sun/ cold damage. Goal my be to lower the canopy a bit and try tong out of the pot.

More Maple Madness
My first maple purchased at nursery for #Bonsai. The base was a grafted and this was the only one that didn’t have reverse taper above the soil line. The graft scar finally disappeared as the “bark” hardened. Decent trunk thickening over about 4 years of captivity. Like the form, but wish the right side would have new shoots added for balance…although the trunk bends/offset would be less dramatic, and the high canopy looks naturally balanced in current form. Light trim, fertilize, and keep on growing.

#Today Big #Bonsai Weekend continues.
Hinoki Cypress showing signs of base thickening. Tie wires beginning to cut into the trunk base. Loosen ties a bit, fertilize, and light trim on major shoots to temper takeoff.
Goal is to slowly bring canopy in tighter and lower a bit. Final design goal is an old twin tree that “has been through some stuff” as evidenced by uneven limbs, some broken deadwood, but is still giving it the “forest try”.

A short visit, I think prices have gone up a lot...I was searching for a Larch..even the small ones were $150 US. I've never grown one, so that's too pricey for me should it die.
Still, I got two pots, nothing handmade or anything. And the dogs entertained the staff.
Their wisteria's had passed blooming stage but there was this stunner:

Ok…so I have a “magic nursery pot” where I stick cuttings of all sizes into. Stuck this one in last summer after a major trim on another crabapple…and it was buried in the back of the tree heap.
Decide to harvest it and it’s huge with two giant (1 cm) apples on it!
Proof that there is no such thing as the perfect soil…this thing is a mix of native soil and leftover potting mix.
Healthy as a horse…hope it enjoys its new home.
Incidentally, this is how you end up with too many trees.
