Finally! Usually we have two generations of eggs, first in late June/early July but I hadn’t found a single egg this year and was starting to worry we wouldn’t have any. For comparison, last year I raised 20 total from eggs collected in our yard.
This morning I collected 8 eggs from four plants.

A Formica francoeuri field ant worker tending to the larva of a Great Copper butterfly (Lycaena xanthoides).
The caterpillar produces secretions attractive to ants, and in turn the ants protect the caterpillar from predators and parasites. San Diego County, California.
