Hornøya, an island in the very far north of Norway, is an important breeding spot for auks and other seabirds. Murres, razorbills, puffins and kittiwakes are some of the threatened species nesting here. Unfortunately an oil spill happened in the region earlier this week, heavily affecting Hornøya’s population. At least 200 birds have been found covered in oil, and the government refuses to help and forbids rehabilitation, meaning many will die 💔 #birds #photography #wildlife #conservation

All the eggs have hatched so today was a lot of upkeep. Caterpillars moved to larger cuttings, cleaning and removing wilted leaves. #insects #butterflies #conservation

I think I’m up to around 40 eggs/caterpillars. Found this bb still out in the wild on a hidden milkweed. #insects #butterflies #conservation

Release, today three males and one female. I lost count of how many eggs I collected, I think between 15-20 and there are at least another 8 I didn’t bring in yet. I may need to order another enclosure because that puts the total of eggs/new caterpillars at around 30. My hope for this year was to raise around 20. All the eggs and milkweed come from our tiny city garden. #insects #butterflies #conservation

Four more eclosed this morning. One chrysalis remains. #insects #butterflies #conservation

Release. Hoping the sudden, brief downpour that came about 30 min later didn’t give our butterflies a tough time. Guess I should have taken 12% chance of showers more serious. Collected 9 eggs and a small caterpillar. #insects #butterflies #conservation

First monarchs of the year have eclosed! Both female. Last year 12 out of 13 were female, which I thought was a pretty dramatic ratio. Also spotted many new eggs in the garden this morning. #insects #butterflies #conservation
