Out today in pre-print from UTAustin's Moran Lab: Mexican honey wasps apparently acquired gut bacteria from honey-feeding bees (like bumble bees) to help them digest their new diet. Honey wasps? Yes, they're real. #Entomology #Science #Insects #Wasps #Microbiome https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.08.27.609949v1

This Calopteron netwinged beetle looks like it belongs in some exotic rainforest. But I photographed in the outskirts of Chicago, at the Indiana Dunes. #Calopteron #Insects #Lycidae #Beetles #Entomology

One of my favorite local insects is the Mexican honey wasp Brachygastra mellifica, a relative of hornets that makes and stores honey. Earlier this week I took a new photo of a live nest, in cutaway, thanks to Jo-anne Holley's research lab here at UT. #Brachygastra #Wasps #Insects #Entomology #Vespidae

I'm so glad that entomologist Doug Yanega's list of funny, actual scientific names is still online. It's from the very early days of the internet, and still updated. #Entomology #Taxonomy https://faculty.ucr.edu/~heraty/yanega.html#%22LIGHTER%22%20LINKS

Found this hiding unidentified in a drawer: only the eleventh known specimen of Leucotmemis pardimacula, a presumably endangered Mexican wasp moth. Ours was collected in Chiapas in 1985. #Entomology #Erebidae #Lepidoptera #Insects #Biodiversity

By the way, nearly all the specimen images we've been creating in the UT collection have been placed in the public domain, and are free to take and use for anything: #Insects #IP #Copyright #Collections #Entomology #Photography https://www.gbif.org/occurrence/gallery?dataset_key=ba9984d8-d982-4fe6-b81c-a7585790034a

A large, approximately 7-inch-wide bolete mushroom has become a feast for various tiny critters in my backyard. #FungiFriday #insects #entomology #bugs #nature #gardening

Brass cast little sculpture of a wood cube showing tunnels carved by a woodworm. Of course the tree was already firewood when I found it, I only cut it into a rough cube. And the woodworm was long gone: Wherever you are, I hope you're OK, it was nice making this collab with you. #MetalCasting #art #ContemporaryArt #sculpture #insect #beetle #abstract #organic #geometric #contrast #WoodWorm #carcoma #SciArt #wood #biology #entomology #casting #xylophague #collaboration
