This mantis was quite curious and a little difficult to photograph as it kept climbing up onto my hand and heading towards my head. I think this is a male Tenodera sinensis, unfortunately not a native insect but still very charismatic.

A bald-faced hornet, scraping up wood from one of the old wooden tables in the backyard for nest building. I've seen nests around here the size of a toddler, but never had any problem with the wasps being aggressive.

It's #InsectSaturday and here's a baby helmeted squash bug (Euthochtha galeator). The adults lack the spines seen here, but have a really beautiful texture on their wings that is quite striking.

I see lacewing eggs and larvae often, but the adults are mostly inactive during the day so it's a treat to find one out where I can get a good look.
I think this is our most common species, Chrysopa oculata.
