While I'm talking cicadas...
I moved to Chicago in 2006, during Brood XIII's last emergence. For 2024, I wanted to paint something representing cicadas as a symbol of cycles and change, and settled on the Death (XIII) card.
I have a limited number of large embellished prints in my shop, as well as small prints.

A selection of photos of periodical cicadas from this year's 17 year brood emergence. What an awesome spectacle.

Felt like I'd been stuck inside too much this week from the heat, so went outside and found a moth.

I adopted a Parade-a-Cicada as part of a public art project but never shared the final results. Her name is Say-say, and she spent most of the summer outside surprising passers-by.
Say-say was a big hit at the recent festival I took her to where many small children came to say hello and give her a pat.

To celebrate #InverteFest, my invertebrate stickers and small prints are on sale for the week!
Newly added multi-color cicadas, a small restock of spider friends, and I'm clearing out my hot cicada summer and Wunderpus stickers.

Spectacular weather out this morning for the final day of #InverteFest. I saw a lot of tiny wasps and a number of spiders, heard a chorus of frogs, saw many warblers and at least half a dozen garter snakes out.

I think I’m done with this.
Acrylic ink, watercolor, gouache and pencil on 12x18” hotpress paper. Border and hairs in gold ink.
I'll get it scanned, but I'll wait to go to the photolab to do it properly.

Spent a lot of time this morning looking up at the newly-opening tree leaves. I think an encyrtid wasp, not far from a few aphids - hosts, maybe?

Except, someone else had moved in. Oops! I felt very sorry for destroying this little Tutelina spider's home. For a few minutes it remained huddled inside, giving me the stink eye. Eventually it grew braver, and crept out to explore the broken gall.
Finally, it jumped onto my finger, and I returned it to the same branch as the gall. Hopefully it was able to find another good spot to hole up in. No more cracking open galls for me! 2/2

A story for #InverteFest, in two parts.
I found this large, conspicuous gall while out walking and after taking a few shots I started to wonder what it looked like inside. Since there was an exit hole, I thought, no one's inside, I'll just crack it open!

It's been a damp, chilly spring but the treehoppers are out! This is a keeled treehopper (Entylia carinata). They come in a variety of color morphs, from mostly cream colored to nearly black, but most of the ones I find around here have this mottled brown pattern.

Flipping bricks, found this rove beetle. It gave me a threat display before scurrying away.

Day 7: A very simple photo, but one of my favorites. In late summer, solitary mining #bees (Andrena sp.) would often visit my basil plants. And at dusk they would bite a flowering top, and hang in there until they fell asleep.
