Besides introducing a new brand, Fedora Atomic Desktops had some specific updates to it in the Fedora 40 release. As a refresher, we're talking about Silverblue, Kinoite, Sway Atomic (was Sericea), and Budgie Atomic (was Onyx) - all under one umbrella! What kind of distros do #Verge editors use? Does modern #Linux really need six hours in the terminal to be painstakingly assembled? Was Nathan Edwards building Linux from Scratch? Tired of seeing posts making Linux seem like an esoteric OS to be used only by experts. The last three #Linux #Mint installations I did for my friends did not need any time on the terminal, or separate driver installations, all three with NVIDIA GPUs BTW (which needs a separate driver installation in Windows). The last few #Fedora #Kinoite installations I did for my non-technical family members took only 10ish minutes at the most, and that’s because I had to write literally only three commands on the terminal to install the NVIDIA driver in one instance. @[email protected] Hey there. I just want to say that I'm also a fan of #OpenSUSE and their approach to this as well. I maintain a bunch of SLE Micro servers in production in my dayjob as well and it is legit amazing. I love as a #Linux user that #opensource is not a zero sum game and that we have some great choices in this space, as well as common areas for collaboration and innovation. As a #Fedora #Kinoite user myself, I'm thrilled #Kalpa exists!

@[email protected] For one thing, I love that #Fedora and #SUSE play well together such that I can easily build and test things for #OpenSUSE using #Distrobox from #Kinoite, not to mention the usefulness of OBS for generating/maintaining custom, immutable OpenSUSE images.

So I recently ran across this post and thread by @[email protected], and I would like to try to address some of the questions/misconceptions/etc that come up in the thread. If you have questions, please, ask. What we do with #Kalpa isn't *identical* to what #Fedora does with their #AtomicDesktops, but many of the concepts for the end user are going to be similar/the same. https://mastodon.online/@vwbusguy/111887740588197543

I have been running KDE Neon for several years now. I am not a hard core Linux user by any means and mostly use it to run my laptop to do every day things (web browsing, some spreadsheets, writing, maybe reformat some video.) I switched to Linux at the end of the Windows 7 era and after distro hopping for a bit, settled on KDE as my DE of choice (although sometimes I think I should check out the newest version of Gnome, but honestly I am pretty happy where I am with KDE.)

I looked at Fedora recently and was a little put off by the installer, but I understand that may be changing.

I have read a couple of articles on "immutable" operating systems, but frankly I don't really understand what they do and what advantage they might have for a more casual user such as myself.

@[email protected] I run #Kinoite personally. If you like the feel of KDE Neon, then Kinoite could be a good fit as well. https://fedoraproject.org/atomic-desktops/kinoite/
