I cracked a tough project today. It was the culmination of 2 months of work. It was only possible because a sloppy contractor left an unsecured private key in a place he thought I'd never look.
Two lessons:
1. Don't use the same key everywhere. I got the keys to the kingdom in one singular moment.
2. Obscurity is a valid security layer. People can't hit what they can't see. But defence in depth is what works. Obscurity can't be your only layer.

Oops I never made an #introduction post.
Hi my name is Rynn! I'm a 29 years old #furry #trans woman located in the eastern United States. I'm also #polyamorous, #asexual, and working with a neuro-psychologist for undaignosed #autism.
I left my corporate IT job at the end of May 2023 and somehow landed a client that needed server help. Now I run my own IT Consulting LLC!
I've been doing IT for a decade now and regularly post about #linux #zfs #informationsecurity #cybersecurity and other tech topics. I have also been cooking and drawing since I was a pre-teen!
My Twitch Channel just made Affiliate! Right now my schedule consists of #minecraft, NES Roulette, and #pokemon Crystal PLUS. You can find me at https://twitch.tv/lycanmatriarch - live Fri, Sat, Sun at 8PM EDT.
Lastly I have a lot of creative hobbies! I'm a digital artist who sketches but rarely finishes pieces, I make #perler pokemon sprites, and I've been the primary home cook in my house since I was a pre-teen!
Whenever I see #BorisJohnson
I wonder: anybody check that phone for #Pegasus etc. lately?

Anyone know any good tips for getting into system administration/IT/cyber security as a high-schooler? I'm not sure which career path I want to take but since there are a lot of tech people on here, I thought you guys might have some pointers.

I coined a new #IncidentResponse term: ALP - Appropriate Levels of Panic
My job as a #cybersecurity incident responder is built around the zero'th rule of IR: Setting appropriate levels of panic.
A responder's very first (zero'th) job is to make sure that everyone involved with an incident (or adverse event) is aware of the severity, urgency, and potential impact. This sets expectations for the entire party.
Calling this "panic" is a bit silly, but it gets the message across. Sometimes during an incident people involved literally panic. Sometimes those involved don't consider an incident a priority at all.
My job is to make people who need to panic more panic more, and those who need to panic less panic less.
We should all panic the same.
