A Seismic Shift in Regulation of BC Lawyers: A Case Study in the Failure of #Democratic Law-Making. “On 10 April 2024, the details of #Bill21 became public... The government’s intention became clear…. The LSBC [#LawSociety of BC] would no longer exist. …BC’s… #lawyers would be changed from “members” of the LSBC to “licensees” of a new 17-member regulatory body. Their only say in governance would be to elect 5 of its 17 members.” | Catherine Morris, SLaw https://www.slaw.ca/2024/07/24/a-seismic-shift-in-regulation-of-bc-lawyers-a-case-study-in-the-failure-of-democratic-law-making/ #LegalProfession

Democracy was never meant to be run by election bc it is too easily corrupted by oligarchs. It was always meant to be by sortition & there is a longer history to that & it's success, than this version of 'democratic' elections which is failing us & fallen to #oligarchs as was known & expected by Athenians. Aristotle said #elections were aristocratic & we're seeing that right down to dynasties. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sortition#History #politics #government #sortition #democracy #democratic #peoplepower
