A poor little tephritid fly with crumpled wings. He crawled onto my hand and hung around a while. He couldn't fly, so I tucked him into what I thought would be a safe place outside.

Friday Flyday!
Here's an insect I'd never seen before: Berkshiria albistylum. A tiny, poorly-known soldier fly. Hanging out in the yard just minding her own business.

Apologies for the poor pictures, but here's a little bee-mimicking robber fly, after and before catching a tiny bee for dinner. I followed this wily hunter around for quite a while, and he wasn't pleased with my interference so he didn't let me get very close.

A fairly odd looking fly, though the halteres give it away. I think this is a March fly, aka lovebug, taking a moment to clean itself on a bent stalk of grass.

Female golden dung fly. These conspicuous flies are common in the US, but I haven't seen them in my yard before. Has me wondering if it's the compost getting their attention. This one was hunting fruit flies and had a couple of near-catches while I was watching.

It's been a slow start to spring, but I spotted this small fly, which looked at a distance more like a grasshopper, on a stalk of dried grass.
Based on its thick spiny legs and distinctive antennae, I think this is Sepedon fuscipennis. Photo taken in Illinois.

It's the last #FlyDay of the year!
I've been unable to ID this fly, it has a distinctly ghostly appearance with interesting mold-green markings on its thorax, and doesn't look much like anything I've seen locally. Photo was taken in June of this year, in Illinois.

A narrow-headed marsh fly, they show up early in the year and stay late.

Inaturalist tells me that both of these are quadrate snipe flies (Chrysopilus quadratus), but their coloration is very different. Does anyone know why? They both look like males, with their head-encompassing (holoptic) eyes. Is there just this much color variation, or have I mis-identified them?

A soldier fly, tentative ID of Merosargus caeruleifrons, for #FlyDay.

For #FlyDay, a flower fly, my guess is genus Eumerus but ID help always welcome.

Friday Flyday! Here's a male Nemotelus soldier fly from Texas who's got his eyes on you. And everything else. Pretty much a complete surveillance unit.
