PSA for Misskey/fork admins: Misskey relies on Redis for long-term data storage. It is *not* just a caching solution, and wiping redis will result in permanent data loss. This is contrary to most guides and documentation regarding redis, because *Misskey is actually using it wrong.* But unfortunately, lots of data is only stored in Redis with no way to re-create it from Postgres: - All notifications - Most timelines, if Fanout Timelines is enabled - Charts and graphs - Federation jobs, including delayed / scheduled jobs - Antennas (they "reset" and lose all posts) - User lists (they "reset" and lose all posts) - Trending hashtags / notes - Reversi games - WebAuthn - User profiles (specifically the list of posts) If you ever lose or rollback your Redis cluster, then all of the above will be impacted. Had an exciting day today. (TL;DR: I accidentally created a Cloudflare Tunnel fight club.) So I moved my #GoToSocial instance to a new server today. The move went really smoothly and the instance was back up in less than 30 min. Then weird shit started happening: sometimes my new posts/replies disappeared and reappeared, images were not always loading, notifications acted up. This confused the fuck out of me. Restarting the server didn't help. I even reinstalled the #Pachli app but it only got weirder: I started seeing "invalid token" errors after logging in, but only 50% of the time and the other 50% it worked perfectly fine. Then came the realization! The old server was still running alongside the new one. Shouldn't really be a problem because the domain is pointing to the new one, right? The thing is though, my instance is running behind a #Cloudflare tunnel so now the same tunnel was running on both servers, fighting each other for control. After shutting down the old server, everything started working fine again. #selfhosting #fediverse #fediadmin #gotosocialadmin

What I'm missing in #Mastodon and #Fediverse is the ability to subscribe to posts or comments to be notified when there are new replies. Do any servers or clients out there support this feature? #fediadmin #mastoadmin

Tip for #singleuser or small instance users: The biggest disadvantage of small instances is the dead federated timeline. Instance admins can subscribe to the classic #relays, but this comes at a high price such as high resource usage and too much noise, depending on the relay. It's either all or nothing. Instead you can populate your federated timeline by following the #FediBuzz relays. They can be followed as normal users and boost posts based on the hashtag, instance or even language. Here are a few examples: @tag-fediverse@relay.fedi.buzz (boosts the #fediverse hashtag from all instances) @instance-jasdemi.com@relay.fedi.buzz (boosts everything from my instance, jasdemi.com) @language-it@relay.fedi.buzz (boosts only posts in Italian language from all instances) Now before you follow any relays, I suggest creating an alt account as this will make you home timeline very noisy. The 2010s saw the loss of online freedom when the majority of the Web was consolidated into a few destinations, and Facebook entering here could lead us back to centralization.
