A poor little tephritid fly with crumpled wings. He crawled onto my hand and hung around a while. He couldn't fly, so I tucked him into what I thought would be a safe place outside. #fly #flies #tephritidae #diptera #insects #photography

The size of this fly made it look intimidating, but fairly certain this is a wood soldier fly, who enjoys eating wood and not being around people. #insects #flies #diptera #FlyDay

Apologies for the poor pictures, but here's a little bee-mimicking robber fly, after and before catching a tiny bee for dinner. I followed this wily hunter around for quite a while, and he wasn't pleased with my interference so he didn't let me get very close. #fly #flies #FlyFriday #asilidae #diptera #insects #arthropods #photography

A little jewel of a robber fly, Taracticus octopunctatus, from Texas hill country. #Asilidae #Flies #Insects

The incomparable Copestylum tamaulipanum hover fly. Photographed in Austin, Texas. #Syrphidae #Insects #Flies #Copestylum

Inaturalist tells me that both of these are quadrate snipe flies (Chrysopilus quadratus), but their coloration is very different. Does anyone know why? They both look like males, with their head-encompassing (holoptic) eyes. Is there just this much color variation, or have I mis-identified them? #fly #flies #FlyFriday #rhagionidae #diptera #insects #arthropods #photography

First thing this morning my 4 y/o spotted this beautiful orange fruit fly on the rose bush, a perfect start to #FlyDay. #insects #flies #diptera #FlyDayFriday #MacroPhotography

So, it's #Flyday Friday. A pretty little Condylostylus with rainbow eyes and wings. #insects #flies #diptera #MacroPhotography

If you’re not Keeping Austin Weird as much as this longhorn cactus fly is, you need to try harder. Just look at those antennae. #Neriidae #Flies #Diptera #Austin #Texas
