In various parts of Britain, 'souling' was practised around Halloween and All Souls Day. People - mainly children and the poor - would go from house to house, singing in a lamenting tone and saying prayers for the inhabitants and - especially - for their dead relatives. In exchange, they received 'soul cakes' - small cakes baked with dried fruits and sweet spices, such as nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon. The custom is rooted in the Catholic doctrine of needing to pray for souls suffering in purgatory, but it continued after the Reformation, up until the 1930s in some places. In parts of South Yorkshire, it is still practised today. Shakespeare wrote of "pulling like a beggar at Hallowmas". #folklore #history #AllSoulsDay #Halloween #food

@[email protected] This is incredibly romantic stuff. In 41 stanzas the pair go from flirting to full-on love in an organic growth. I will be re-reading this chapter a few times more before continuing so I can get the finer points of this conversation by song.

This is the pivotal point of the story and it was surprisingly touching. And I called it: the entire point of the previous three chapters was to build up to E'bing's arrival in the story: she's explicitly compared to earlier encounters.

@[email protected] The next chapter is one I probably should have done together with chapter 7, given that it's basically the flip side of that chapter's narrative. This update will be shorter as a result. In chapter 8, after waiting for the proper time (moonrise), spinning thread (and concealing a stool for him beneath her skirts¹) in the mean time, Sangluo and E'bing meet again to sing their love to each other. #Dai #Chinese #folklore

@[email protected] Chapter 7 is a pivotal part of the story. It's also the literal heart of the story: chapter 7 of 13. As a result I will be giving it its own section. This is the chapter in which E'bing is introduced and, as expected, given the huge build-up of how every girl wants Sangluo, she is herself the most beautiful woman in the story. She is "whiter than cotton¹" and "gentler than clouds". #Chinese #Dai #folklore

And thus is the stage set for the ensuing tragedy. (Oops! Spoiler warning!)

The actual story hasn't started yet. It's mostly been exposition and introduction: of the setting, of one of the two leads, and of the situation that leads to the actions of the story.

And I'm still smitten.

This is, even through *two* layers of translation, a gripping tale, and the little bits of research I've done to get some of its subtler points have made the Dai easily equal the Yi for fascination.

So, this #folklore story has accomplished the impossible. It has made me break out a notebook so I can take notes to prepare my impressions. Flashback to high school. I hate you all for doing this to me! (🤭) This time around I'm doing three chapters as they're thematically very related and transplant the story from the safe environment of Sangluo's hometown to the place where the bulk of the story seems to take place: Menggen. @[email protected]

So, I'm starting on 娥病与桑落 (Ebing and Sangluo), another piece of #Dai #folklore. While the book is only 50 pages longer (~180 pages vs ~130), the nature of the story-telling is very different and requires a more in-depth look. I've thus decided that I will approach it differently with, perhaps, a more rigorous look. The book is, as before, published by #Wuhan University Press as part of its Southern Folklore line.
