Something for #frogfriday - a Tiger-leg Monkey Frog (Callimedusa tomopterna) in the rainforest of NE Peru. "Monkey-frog" comes from their habit of using all four limbs to grasp and climb through the vegetation. They can still leap a bit if necessary. #herps #frogs #nature #naturephotography
Lizards are special creatures. Can you do this? I didn't think so. #WorldLizardDay #herps #nature #naturephotography
This is always a hard day - it's difficult to remain positive, as serpents always fall victim to fear, ignorance, and perhaps worst of all, indifference. Like many other kinds, this Kui Buri Pitviper (Trimeresurus kuiburi) from southern Thailand will never generate shareholder value, will always lose out to human 'progress', and will rarely be considered with any context deeper than 'cool snake, bro' on social platforms. #WorldSnakeDay #herps #nature
Who needs fireworks? Jeweled chameleon (Furcifer lateralis), SE Madagascar, 2023 #herps #chameleons #nature #naturephotography
A Uakari poison frog (Ranitomeya uakarii) from last week along the the Rio Tahuayo drainage, SE of Iquitos, Peru. The males carry the tadpoles on their backs, climbing trees to bromeliad refugia and depositing them in water reservoirs among the leaves. Adult R. uakarii fit comfortably on your thumbnail, and get their name from the Uakari monkey, which has a somewhat similar distribution across Amazonia. #frogs #herps #nature #naturephotography
Here’s one of the calico snakes (Oxyrhopus formosus) from the rain forest of NE Peru. This species almost seems to self-illuminate :) #herps #snakes #nature #naturephotography
Every frog has its day (World Frog Day). I love the bright-eyed frogs, so here's an Ambatovory Bright-eyed Frog (Boophis quasiboehmei), photographed near Andasibe, Madagascar in March 2023. #frogs #herps #worldfrogday #nature #naturephotography
In honor of Leap Day, here's a Mishana Poison Frog (Ranitomeya amazonica) from a few weeks ago in NE Peru. Fits comfortably on my thumbnail :) #herps #frogs #nature #naturephotography #leapday
Here's a turtle I've wanted to see for a long while - Chelus fimbriata, the Matamata, a sort of Amazonian snapping turtle, if you will. A young one, of perfect size for photography and just interesting and crazy-cool as a turtle could be. Have mercy. #TurtleTuesday #herps #nature #naturephotography
A very young Toadhead Turtle (Mesoclemmys nasuta), from a few weeks ago in NE Peru. This is a side-neck species, tucking its head to one side instead of directly retracting it. Note the curb feelers on the chin, which are sensory organs useful in dark and murky water. #turtles #herps #nature #naturephotography
The Amazon Pygmy Gecko (Pseudogonatodes guianensis), is an unassuming and secretive lizard, living in the leaf litter of the rain forest. They are dark-colored to the eye, and 1.5 - 2 inches long as an adult. A wee and shadowy creature, but get a camera flash on them, and they look magnificent. Photographed a few weeks ago in NE Peru. #herps #lizards #nature #naturephotography
Theloderma has some interesting and beautiful species - Taman Negara Bug-eyed Frog (Theloderma licin). Yala, Thailand #frogfriday #frogs #nature #naturephotography #herps
I'm grateful for some amazing opportunities this year, including a return to Thailand. Here's a Green Cat Snake (Boiga cyanea), observed in Phuket. #herps #snakes #nature #naturephotography
For #turtletuesday here are two young-of-the-year softshell turtles, found on the same stretch of sandbar back in 2017. Bottom is Apalone spinifera, the spiny softshell, and Apalone mutica, the smooth softshell, is on top. The differences between the two species are easy to look up, but I thought it was useful to get a shot of both together. The two may occupy the same river in some places, a sort of riparian brotherhood if you will. #herps #turtles #nature
