It's easy for one generation of workers to take for granted stuff that previous generations of workers fought so hard for. Many junior devs now just get to use git and deploy on Linux in a container via a test driven CI change system with their IDE of choice without having to spend months to years to decades justifying each piece of that architecture to various skeptical managers who have a passionate lingering affinity for Windows XP. #programming #Linux #DevOps

I'm somewhat of an old school guy. My first programming languages were BASIC and C, if they counts. While I'm not personally particularly fond of Rust, I do respect it and think it should live in the #Linux kernel where it's the right tool for the job. While it is *relatively* new compared to C, it isn't actually new at all by #programming standards. I remember going through a #Rust tutorial with a Mozilla dev at OSCON a little shy of a decade ago.

Some of my aversion to complicated IDEs dates back to the Osborne One having you type out your CBASIC code in fancy WordStar 4.5 "binary mode" where Microsoft's MBASIC had it's own dead simple turn key IDE that didn't require swapping out floppies in between code tests. https://pixelfed.social/i/web/post/426438982768129979 #Programming #BASIC #IDE #retrocomputing #OsborneOne
