A very young Toadhead Turtle (Mesoclemmys nasuta), from a few weeks ago in NE Peru. This is a side-neck species, tucking its head to one side instead of directly retracting it. Note the curb feelers on the chin, which are sensory organs useful in dark and murky water. #turtles #herps #nature #naturephotography

For #turtletuesday here are two young-of-the-year softshell turtles, found on the same stretch of sandbar back in 2017. Bottom is Apalone spinifera, the spiny softshell, and Apalone mutica, the smooth softshell, is on top. The differences between the two species are easy to look up, but I thought it was useful to get a shot of both together. The two may occupy the same river in some places, a sort of riparian brotherhood if you will. #herps #turtles #nature

かめランド全景、更新。 我が家はエアコンを常時稼働させていて、室温は8月現在28℃。 水温も同じくらいに温まってしまうので、水換えの際に冷蔵庫で冷やしておいた冷水を混ぜています（1人1リットルでようやく26℃になる） 温度計はSwitchBotのもの、ライトは1電源で二股に分かれたものを襖に固定して使用。時間帯によって弱くしたり消したりしています。 #turtle #turtles #クサガメ
